What Motivates the Changes to AdWords Quality Score?

It is helpful if you think this from Google’s standpoint. Why would Google add landing page factor into Quality Score if that only makes them less money in the long run?

There must be at least a solid reason to do that.

I am not by any means connected to Google except that I advertise using Google AdWords and generate some revenue using AdSense. Generally, this post is just my opinion but I think it pretty much describes what is behind the changes.

There are certainly more reasons behind this, but like I said before understanding this will be helpful not only for the purpose of knowing but also to help create a strategy for quality landing page and overall site.

Basically, Google depends on search engine users for their business. They are now leveraging traffic from different sources with the introduction of AdSense and later many other products but let us just ignore those for a moment. So, Google’s main business is providing search results.

What makes users come back to use the search engine repeatedly is:

  1. Relevant results - Users should be able to get what they want to search for, at least most of the time.
  2. Good experience - It is best if they can easily find what they want instead of having to click countless times and sift through loads of information.

With this in mind, Google do their best to return best results for the organic search results.

For advertisements — Google AdWords, Google would like to provide the same values to search users. This is done for the same reason: they want users to keep clicking on the ads so they could make money.

The old way to separate good ads from bad ads doesn’t work perfectly. For example, if I knew how to cramp excellent copy into Google Adwords ads, even if I had a very lousy site or landing page, I would still get all the clicks I wanted.

Not anymore.

Because now Google takes the quality of the overall site into account. Yes, you read that right, the quality of the entire site, instead of just the landing page.

Blatantly speaking, Google now don’t want lousy site owners to advertise on their site.

They do that simply by raising the mininum bid price, so affected advertisers are to add value and quality to their site or risk running out of business.
