Todd Interviewing Roger Montti

Todd Malicoat has an interview with Roger “Martinibuster” Montti about recent issues on marketing on the web and its evolution. If you are playing in this field, you know that things change at a rapid rate. For example, earlier this year reciprocal linking was praised as whitehat and everybody was doing it, although Google never approve that.
After update Jagger, the need for one way inbound links has grown a hundred fold. “Reciprocal linking exchanges have started smelling like last weeks fish to a lot of people for many different reasons,” says Montti.
Another tactic that is going to burn out is article directory submission.
Article directory submissions are marching toward a peak right now and should reach critical mass sometime next year when everyone including your grandmother is doing it. Directories in general seem to be out of fashion and should continue to be out of fashion until those creating directories wise up to the value in lead generation. There are a handful of quality directories out there right now, but I would say that the days of visiting your friendly neighborhood list of directories and bottom feeding the cheapest directories are over.
The journey to improve your site is getting tougher and tougher, of which Montti suggested that no SEO is the best SEO (?), while making your site a destination, thinking viral, adding community and getting some press.
I admit the things he said are not specific enough. Viral marketing, for example, has been here since the early day of online marketing. What are the specific tactics for viral marketing? May be create something that is unique and useful, write blog posts that are newsworthy, etc.
Instead of building a bunch of sites, now is the time to focus on one, two or a handful and make them really count.
